Photography competitions are a dime a dozen. In fact, there are probably a few more taking place as you read this article.

And here comes yet another competition.

Unlike the rest, this digital photography competition I am talking about comes with a green twist.

The “Sentinels of Time: Majestic Trees of Selangor” digital photography competition, organised by non-profit environmental organization, EcoKnights, is a competition for anyone (Malaysian and non-Malaysian) to take digital images of majestic trees that can be found in the state of Selangor.

The idea is to get as many Malaysians to record, document (through photographs), describe and locate these trees through a photographic competition which doubles as a platform to engage the public to take a more active role in reforestation and conservation.

The best 12 digital images will be used as exhibition materials to educate the public on the need to protect existing trees via photography exhibitions all around the country.

These 12 specially selected images of trees act as symbols to teach, educate and inform the public on the importance of forest conservation and reforestation in the country.

In short, the competition aims to raise awareness on the species and locations of majestic trees in Selangor.

Around RM25, 000 worth of cash and prizes are to be won in this competition and participation is through an online submission of a digital image (between 2Mb to 5 MB in size) with a detail description of the location of the image.

The contest started on June 1. Contestants can submit single or multiple entries by Aug 30 to

The competition, supported by the Selangor state government, is inviting hobby photographers and students of any age and nationality, and the general public to submit digital images that illustrate beautiful, outstanding and majestic trees found in the state of Selangor.

The Facebook Page (Sentinels of Time) community will cast their votes to select the top twelve photos for 2012.

A panel of experts will award RM5,000, RM3,000 and RM2,000 worth of cash and prizes to the first, second and third place winners of the 12 best photographs.

The remaining photographs will be awarded RM300 and a certificate. All the 12 digital photographs will be exhibited in art and photography galleries and aims to be auctioned off to bidders.

Proceeds of the sales from the auction will establish a fund to reforest areas in Selangor and this fund is made available to high schools and universities located in Selangor to apply to utilise the money for tree planting efforts.
